Kibaku: A people persecuted for Christ
The Kibaku is a tribe of about less than 100,000 people found in the southern part of Borno state. They occupy the areas of Chibok (Kibak) local government area and parts of Askira local government and Damboa Local Government areas. About 95% of their population are Christians. They mostly belong to Ekkilisiyan Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN) Church of the Brethren in Nigeria; the most affected Church by the Boko Haram insurgency. Today more than 200 hundred worship places of the EYN in Borno and some parts of Adamawa state have destroyed including the national headquarters of the church and a Bible School.
Years before the activities of the Islamist Sect Boko Haram in the area the areas have suffered a lot of backwardness and neglect. This simply was because of their faith as Christians. In the hard times and the trying moments the gospel has continue to deepen among these people.
Having been sidelined in most government appointments the Kibaku have very slim access to education as is provided by the government. In the area the only standard secondary school is the Government Secondary School Chibok where the over 200 girls (mostly Christians) were abducted from. That school could admit but a limited number of students as for the rest they would have to go to either to Damboa (A Muslim community) or other places where the children are often threatened and frightened by both teachers and students to abandon their believe in Jesus Christ.
